Tesla Cybertruck is going to be a $35,000 truck in 18 months, expert says

Tesla Cybertruck used prices are declining as more trucks reach two years old. Doug DeMuro, a popular car reviewer who became somewhat of a car pricing expert through his auction site Car and Bids, now predicts the Tesla Cybertruck will be selling for just $35,000 in 18 months.

When Tesla initially set the base price of a new Cybertruck at $40,000 when unveiling the truck in 2019, but the electric pickup truck started at $80,000 when it was officially launched in 2023.

Along with a lower range and fewer features, it significantly reduced the truck’s value proposition and resulted in a commercial flop with Tesla only selling the Cybertruck at about 10% of its production capacity.

The Cybertruck is also not holding its value very well, like most Tesla vehicles.

On his podcast, DeMuro commented that he sees Cybertrucks selling in the $60,000s and they are “knocking on the door of the $50,000s”.

DeMuro is in a unique position to see these trends. As the founder of Cars & Bids, an enthusiast car auction platform, he has a front-row seat to the real-time market value of hype vehicles. We saw it happen with the Hummer EV, we saw it with the Rivian R1T to an extent, but the Cybertruck curve seems to be the steepest yet.

In his position, DeMuro made a bold prediction about the Cybertruck:

“I think in 18 months this is a $35,000 truck.”

If accurate, that would represent a staggering loss of value. The oldest Cybertrucks are the “Foundation Series” trucks, which sold for over $100,000 (often $120,000+ with taxes and fees).

Tesla was stuck with Foundation Series Cybertruck well into 2025, but it officially switched production to the “regular Cybertruck” in late 2024 and those started at $80,000.

A drop to $35,000 would mean owners could lose about $45,000 in depreciation in 3-4 years.

We have already reported on the inventory piling up at Tesla delivery centers and the fact that Tesla has worked through its massive reservation list much faster than anticipated, or rather, the conversion rate was much lower than the “2 million pre-orders” number suggested.

This quarter, Elon Musk’s SpaceX helped by buying over 1,000 Cybertrucks, but it’s unlikely to have a major impact on used prices.

Electrek’s Take

This is a harsh prediction from Doug, but is it realistic?

That sounds right, given the aggressive depreciation rates of niche/luxe products like this (see: Mercedes S class) and the fact that they'll be about 3+ years old by then. $35K for a 100,000 mile CT sounds spot-on.

If used Cybertrucks actually hit $35,000, that changes the value proposition entirely.

If Doug is right, the Cybertruck might fail as a luxury status symbol but succeed accidentally as the cheap, beat-up work truck it probably should have been all along instead of toy for influencers.

Personally, I think $35,000 is a bit aggressive for 18 months out. I could see them settling in the $40,000 range.

What do you think? Would you buy a used Cybertruck for $35k? Let us know in the comments below.
